Steps for the Future – Classroom Support (Volunteer)

high5-recruitment_02

Do you have an interest or background in dance and/or music? If so, we’d really love to hear from you.

Steps for the Future is a Derby-based dance and music performance group for adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health issues. The group has performed all over Derbyshire in the last few years and we are continually offered new events to perform at. We are based at the Community Centre on Alice Street and this is where the dance and music workshops are held. Our group is professional, fun and inclusive.

We are a friendly bunch of people always keen to take on new volunteers to support our workshops and performances. We hope you can help us empower the group, increase their self-confidence, skills and independence. We’re sure you’ll have a lot of fun too.

You’ll need to have a background/interest in dance and/or music and have an empathy with our students and a willingness to work within our philosophy – our students make their own decisions on dance and music. Working together as friends, with a firm belief in the group, creativity flows. In our classes we require our volunteers to be able to write reports within the class confidently.

Potential volunteers are encouraged to make contact with Maggie or Jenny to book a visit
(E-mail stepsforthefuture@ymail.com ; Phone: 07534 120 845). Interviews then take place to ensure we’re right for you and you’re right for us etc. We’ll then ask for two character references. Volunteers are buddied up with more experienced volunteers initially to help ease them into the organisation. At no time are volunteers left unsupported nor will they have unsupervised access to group members

Group members have moderate needs, are quite independent and do not need support with personal care

Do you have an interest in health and well-being? If so, we’d really love to hear from you.

Livewell is a health and well-being club which is run in partnership with Steps for the Future. Workshops take place at the Queen’s Leisure Centre every Thursday and are aimed to teach people with differences about healthy eating and exercise. The aim is to make adults with differences more aware of what they are eating and drinking, and what effects this could have on their health. There are also aerobic exercises for everyone to take part in.
